The Electric Truck We All Thought Was Impossible Might Be Here Soon

May 20, 2017

Could this electric pickup change the truck game for good?

The number of electric vehicles available on the market continues to rise, and there’s no sign of that trend slowing. But one area of interest for many outdoor enthusiasts is the pickup market. When will there be an electric pickup that’s not only efficient, but rugged, capable, and powerful enough to handle the demands of the mountains? Well, one Ohio-based company believes they may have answered that question. And the answer is sooner than you think.

Introducing Workhorse. The company has developed a hybrid-electric truck from the ground up. That’s right. This is not an existing model retro-fitted with an electric option. This truck was designed from the start to provide an electric option that holds true to everything we desire from a rig.

Workhorse hopes to begin selling the trucks as soon as 2018.

The initial offering is for a model called the W-15 that runs on lithium-ion batteries. Two motors, one for each axle, provide an impressive 460 total horsepower. And if you run out of juice? No problem. The truck is also equipped with a 3-cylinder BMW gas engine. On battery only mode, the truck is expected to be able to run for around 80 miles. Combine the battery with the fuel efficient gas engine and your range exceeds 300 miles.

Early reports indicate the truck would get around 28 MPG in the city and 32 on the highway.

According to Workhorse, the truck will have a towing capacity up to 5,000 pounds and can haul 2,200 pounds in its 6.5′ bed.
